Bourbon Sidecar Cocktail

I have a soft spot in my heart for classic cocktails.

I’ve always had a crush on an Old Fashion. Bourbon and bitters make my heart sing. Actually, bourbon in general makes my heart sing. Looking to break out of my usual rut, I decided to try another classic cocktail that uses bourbon.

The Bourbon Sidecar is a twist on the traditional Sidecar that’s made with cognac. A little sweet, citrusy, warm and inviting.

In an effort to break my boring streak of drinking an Old Fashion or Whisky Ginger, I went on a search for a classic bourbon drink that would use Triple Sec.

A few clicks and the Bourbon Sidecar popped up on the screen.

Here’s a little abbreviated history of the drink:

The Sidecar was said to be created around the end of World War I in London or Paris. The Ritz Hotel in Paris claims the rights to the original recipe. Who really knows…another citation states it was popular in France but created in London by an American Army ex-pat.

The original recipe was created with equal amounts of cognac, triple sec, and lemon juice. Honestly, that would be so potent. It would definitely be a strong drink.

It was traditionally served up in a stemmed cocktail glass.

I’m not a cognac person and I have a pretty good stash of bourbon so that’s why my recipe deviates from the traditional.

I also deviate in my ratios and I serve it on the rocks. I find that much like my Basil Gimlet, I prefer stronger cocktails on the rocks.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Here’s a great list of Sidecar variations from Difford’s Guide.

Cheers!
